Rethinking Culture – Making Change
The theme of the Ethnologia Fennica 2021 issue (vol. 48: 1) is Rethinking Culture – Making Change. Different fields and individual research projects often need to justify their existence in terms of their social impact beyond academia. Research projects are expected to produce knowledge that can be used in practice. What impact beyond academia can research make? How can we rethink culture as an agent of transformation? What makes culture a suitable concept for reflecting on contemporary and challenging issues, such as the climate crisis, sustainability, migration, social justice, pandemics, education, and cross-cultural relations?
One way of making an impact is to use participatory approaches and collaborate with stakeholders outside academia. Both require methods and epistemologies that make room for different actors and their worldviews. In addition, there are alternative research strategies in which the role of the researcher/research group is one of social activist(s). Can research become an arena for social activism, and what does this mean as regards epistemology and research ethics? What kinds of (similar or contradictory) expectations may collaborators and participants have? How should researchers position themselves in relation to their collaborative partners?
The 2021 issue of Ethnologia Fennica calls for articles that discuss ways of making change through applied ethnographic and ethnological research. We welcome texts that discuss different ways of making an impact based on an analysis of the participation and collaboration of various interest groups and the role of research in activism and processes of decision-making. We also encourage texts that engage with the expectations set by funding programmes and their agendas.
Please note that in every issue, we also publish articles outside the theme, and you can submit your manuscript at any time.
Ethnologia Fennica is a peer-reviewed, international open access journal. The journal publishes original scholarly articles, review articles, conference reports, and book reviews written in English. The articles undergo double-blind peer review. The Finnish Publication Forum classifies Ethnologia Fennica as a leading academic journal at Level 2 (on a scale of 0 to 3).
The deadline for submitting article manuscripts is January 15, 2021. The deadline for reviews, reports, and commentary texts is March 2, 2021. The issue will be published in autumn 2021.
Please submit your language revised article (which should not exceed 10,000 words) through the Journal.fi submission system (journal.fi/ethnolfenn). Authors need to register with the journal prior to submitting their manuscript or, if already registered, they simply log in and begin the submission process.
